The chiropractic adjustment can be delivered in many different ways, these are called chiropractic techniques. It can be compared to writing the same words using different fonts.
The decision to use different chiropractic techniques varies depending on clinical findings and other factors such as age and state of health. Having been in practice for many years, the chiropractors in this office are well versed in many techniques. They are astute at identifying the indication for each technique. As well, not everyone responds to the same technique in the same way, each person’s body is different and unique.
Chiropractic care can be quite tailored to the individual’s needs. For example, an elderly person with brittle bones would require a very different treatment style than an athlete. Both can equally get great results with different approaches to care.
The chiropractic assessmentis the first step in determining the issues at hand and gives the doctor important information regarding which technique to utilise for the best possible patient care.
In general, the chiropractor will opt to use one technique based on the consultation and examination findings. When the patient returns for a follow up visit, the chiropractor will assess how the body responded to the treatment and compare these findings to the expected outcome. Putting together all this information, the chiropractor may choose to change techniques, modify the technique or add a technique.
Our goal is to assist the patient achieve their health targets in the most efficient way possible. This includes varying the treatment approach using different techniques as required, adding exercises, stretching, and home care routines.
Manual diversified technique is known as the “old school” or classic approach to chiropractic. It is the primary technique used at this office. Other techniques, frequently used in addition to the hands on technique are Activator, Arthrostim and Drop table technique. Mobilisation and soft tissue techniques are also incorporated into the patient care protocols.
Manual adjustment
Manual diversified technique is the most known and used chiropractic technique. It is the classic chiropractic hands-on technique and the primary technique used by our chiropractors.
When a chiropractor uses this technique, hands are placed on specific areas of the spine or other articulation being adjusted and a low amplitude high velocity (shallow and quick) thrust is applied to the area in a very specific direction. The purpose of this adjustment is to restore range of motion in the area in question in order to optimize nervous system function.
At times, a clicking sound can be heard with this adjustment. This is a process called cavitation which is similar to opening a bottle of soda and the liquid inside creates gas.
Activator technique
The activator technique is a widely used technique in the world of chiropractic. This technique uses an activator tool to deliver the adjustment.
The purpose of the adjustment is to impart motion to the spine or the articulation in question in order to restore optimal nervous system function.
This is a gentle technique which can be used in certain cases when a patient requires a softer touch. This is the case with patients with osteoporosis when the bone structure itself is compromised. It is also very helpful when a patient has difficulty moving around due to pain or other conditions.
At times, an activator technique can be used in conjunction with other techniques. For example, a manual diversified adjustment may be given then an activator may be used to adjust a rib in addition.
Arthrostim adjusting
An Arthrostim instrument is an adjusting tool powered by electricity that delivers repetitive thrusts in an area and a direction guided by the practitioner.
The purpose of the Arthrostim is to give movement to the vertebra or the articulation in question in order to restore proper nervous system function. The chiropractor can adjust the depth of the thrust as well as the speed of the thrust to accommodate varying patients.
Many conditions respond very well to this type of adjustment. . As with the activator, this instrument can be used in addition to other techniques.
Drop Table Technique
The drop table technique is a manual technique used with specific table which are equipped to deliver a drop adjustment. In this case, the chiropractor first raises the table in preparation, then applies pressure to the area which needs adjusting and the table releases delivering an adjustment.
This type of adjustment is excellent when the doctor assesses that rotation is not desired. The patient experience is excellent, and the treatment is highly effective.
Which technique is best?
This question is asked frequently. The short answer is it depends. Many factors are taken into consideration when choosing an adjusting technique. Clinical factors such as examination findings and case history play an important role in choosing a technique. Patient comfort also plays a key role, some patient like one technique over another technique.
Offering many adjusting styles allows the practitioner to tailor the treatment approach to the patient and deliver optimal results.
