What changes occur during pregnancy?
Each phase in pregnancy brings about different physical changes. At the beginning of pregnancy, a hormone called relaxin is released. This causes ligaments to become relaxed. At times, this can cause some changes in the pelvis, sacro-iliac joints and low back. These changes are better managed when followed by a chiropractor who can ensure proper alignment of the spine and optimal function of the nervous system.
During the growth phase, the belly starts to grow and get heavier. This changes the center of gravity and puts pressure on the low back as well as the neck. Chiropractic care is very beneficial in alleviating the discomfort associated with this phase. According to the Canadian Chiropractic Association, 16 out of 17 women experience relief from pregnancy related symptoms.
Pre-existing conditions such as spinal and back related problems are often brought to the forefront during pregnancy or soon after. Issues which may have been small in the past could increase during this time. These are valid reasons to be in good health prior to conception as well as during the pregnancy and afterwards to enjoy the process to the fullest.
Labour and delivery are certainly a crowning physical performance after 9 months of preparation. The birthing experience can be enhanced in many ways. The doctors at this clinic are well equipped to guide an expecting couple through a purposeful design of childbirth. We believe in Childbirth by Design whereby the couple designs their optimal childbirth experience considering the potential for unexpected surprises and devising a framework for a gradient of intervention. This results in a more active participation and fulfilling experience.
Post-Natal care is critical to restore the mother and baby to optimal nervous system function. Many women will experience some discomfort after delivery. Restoring proper body function can assist in post-partum recovery.
