What is piriformis syndrome
The piriformis muscle is a flat band-like muscle which is attached from the sacrum to the top of the femur. This muscle is very important since the sciatic nerve runs underneath it and at times through it. When the piriformis muscle gets too tight or spasms, it can compress the sciatic nerve and give symptoms of sciatica.
Common symptoms associated with this syndrome are pain in the buttock area and p ain going down the leg can also occur.

How do you get piriformis syndrome?
Regular activities such as running, walking, cycling or rowing can cause stress and inflammation of the piriformis muscle. This repetitive strain injury can compress the sciatic nerve and cause pain.
Misalignments in the spine, pelvis, hips or legs can also cause undue strain on the piriformis muscle. When the spine and pelvis are misaligned, it required the musculature to overwork and can create issues such as piriformis syndrome.
Other events such as traumas can also cause trouble in the piriformis
Treatment for piriformis syndrome
Keeping in mind that muscle are not independent thinkers, and they get their instruction from the brain, an important question to ask is “Why is the piriformis spasmed and inflamed?” When this question is examined properly and answered correctly, treatment can be very successful.
Chiropractors perform a very thorough initial examination not only to determine the cause of the issue at hand but also to rule out potentially harmful situations. The chiropractor’s diagnosis leads to appropriate treatment or referral. Following the prescribed course of treatment will help the patient achieve long term results.
