The foot is a very complex and mobile structure. It is designed to support the weight of the entire body with enough flexibility to perform all the movements required to propel the body forward during gait.
Orthotics are also known as pelvic stabilisers. The function of the foot is often a reflection of issues which may be occurring elsewhere in the body. For example, when a person is limping, perhaps due to a hip problem or back problem, the foot and gait pattern are affected.
When an orthotic is used, it can stabilise all of the structures above it. This includes the knees, the hips, the back and the head.
Who requires orthotics.
Orthotics can be used to relieve foot pain such as plantar fasciitis, heel spurs or bunions. They can also be used to stabilise the spine as part of a larger treatment programme.
When there is a leg length discrepancy from a leg fracture or other, the orthotic can compensate for the difference and reduce the strain on the back and hips.
Treatment
It is very important to assess a person prior to making orthotics. When the feet are not functioning properly and producing pain, the root cause of the dysfunction must be determined to have longstanding results. Remember that orthotics not only change the comfort of the foot, but it also changes the gait pattern, therefore affecting all the other structures.
A chiropractic assessment is the first step in determining the proper course of action. At times it is appropriate to correct the underlying issue prior to fabricating an orthotic. For example, when a person presents with bunions, it is easy to understand that abnormal forces have been exerted on the foot and the body has responded. By first correcting the underlying cause of the bunion (foot dysfunction), then using an orthotic, better results can be expected.
